New Food Bank just for kids!

Kid's Korner Children's food relief outreach

As of September 2017, The Giving Plate opened a food bank just for kids! Even though we have served kids since day one, we now have a space within our facility that is designated just for children ages 18 and under to come in and pack their own bag.  Our new, children-focused, food outreach is called "Kids Korner”.  We are very excited to have this new outreach a part of The Giving Plate as we especially love bringing smiles to the faces of the children!  Feeding the body...feeds the mind.  The children are thrilled to pick out and carry out their own bag of food, and the parents gratitude for this program is touching.  Because of generous grant funds specifically designated for food, and the abundance of kid-friendly food donated through the Bend Food Project, we are able to offer this service.  We are excited to watch this program grow as we intentionally touch the lives of  children in our community!

Currently, we have converted our 130 square foot office space to the Kid's Korner.   We are already feeling tight in this space, and it is not big enough to allow us to grow it how we want to.   In 2018 we will be building a 600 square foot loft above our office area and waiting room.  This space will allow us to grow Kid's Korner, and continue to creatively and compassionately reach out to the children in our community who are in need.

Please consider a donation to help us raise the $45,000 needed to build this space, and then furnish it.  We are better together and can not do what we do without the generousity of those around us!

Hunger is Everywhere

Today, hunger is everywhere – whether in the city, suburbs, or even the rural areas. The basic need of food is one of the critical problems that exist in Deschutes County.  According to Feeding America’s 2011 Meal Gap Study, Oregon has the nation’s highest rate of “child food insecurity.”  About 252,000 kids – or nearly 30% of the state’s youth – don’t know where their next meal is coming from.  The Giving Plate is experiencing a 35-40% rate of kids needing food.  Deschutes County still maintains a high unemployment rate of 4.2%, which is just over the national unemployment rate of 4.1% (as of January 2018).

People with low incomes wrestle over buying food, or medicine, or putting gas in their cars (if they have a car).  They wrestle over buying school supplies or milk or keeping the phone on. Kids who do homework online may not be able to if parents have to make a decision between food or the internet. Children need nutritious food in order to be able to concentrate and succeed in school without the pangs of hunger on their minds.

Six million elderly are not getting the nutrition they need.  They may be home bound, in which case they are unable to get food.  It is a community’s responsibility to take care of their elderly.

Taking part in relieving these situations is what The Giving Plate is all about.  We are not just providing food, but offering piece of mind to our guests and allowing them to focus their resources on more than just their next meal.

Oregon has the nation’s highest rate of “child food insecurity.” About 252,000 kids – or nearly 30% of the state’s youth – don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Volunteer Shifts

Our volunteers work 3-4 hour shifts in the late morning to mid-afternoon on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays year-round.

The Giving Plate sincerely thanks the many grantors as follows who have provided us funding in the last several years.  With their support and with the support from many individual donors, The Giving Plate has been able to sustain our operations so that we can serve the low-income and homeless of Deschutes County with emergency food boxes. If your company would like to provide support for the Giving Plate via food or funds, please email
